Kimsean, 21, found new direction and hope through the Youth Livelihood Development project in Tropeang Prasat.
“After dropping out of Grade 7, I worked as a labourer to support my family. I wanted to start my own business but we couldn’t afford [training]. Then I participated in FH Cambodia’s 10-month Youth Livelihood Development project. I learned [barbering], and gained courage from the staff to pursue a career I love. Before, I felt depressed and had no job or goals for myself. Through the program, I developed skills to earn money. It’s been a life-changing experience for me. [Now I] serve as a role model for other youth. I want to start my own business and provide opportunities for young dropouts, so even those who do not graduate can support their families.” says Kimsean, from Cambodia
Uganda
Life-skills training in Bukiende, Uganda gave 25-year-old Junior the shot at success he deserved.
“Being successful is everyone’s desire,” says Junior. “It doesn’t matter whether the person is a child, youth, or aged.”
For years, Junior struggled to launch a career that would provide for his large family. Circumstance thwarted him at every turn. His children and siblings suffered—they couldn’t afford school and their health declined. “I felt bad because I lost interest in doing daily activities. I felt guilty and helpless,” Junior remembers.
Then he got his big break—free FH workshops in leadership and farming. With a new foundation in project planning, management, and practical farming skills, he launched a successful business raising and selling pigs.
“I discovered my strengths,” he shares. “I found out what I’m good at, whether multitasking, staying organized, generating ideas, or serving others. This self-awareness [helped] me as I prepared to explore the future. [Now] I garden, raise [livestock] and farm to feed my family. I want to empower youth in my community to do the same.”
Rwanda
Sewing training and supportive cooperatives are transforming the futures of young, unmarried mothers in Busekera, Rwanda.
“Now I have hope that the future is good for me as I am equipped with vocational skills that can help me everywhere I might be.” says Celine, from Rwanda.
