January 6, 2009: CFHI aids Guatemalan city impacted by major landslide.
On Sunday, January 4, a landslide that buried a road in the northern part of Guatemala left at least 35 people dead, 15 injured and dozens missing. The landslide happened when part of a mountain collapsed in the department state of Alta Verapaz, sending tons of earth and rock crashing down onto the road.
By Tuesday, Guatemalan authorities made the decision to suspend the search for victims, citing unstable terrain and the risk to rescue workers due to the rugged terrain being extremely vulnerable to floods and more landslides.
Food for the Hungry (FH) Response: FH Guatemala responded immediately to the disaster and used their own funding for the distribution of food and clothing to victims. CFHI is coming alongside FH Guatemala to raise funds to rehabilitate the water sources that were destroyed in the landslide.
